Failure to follow rules and procedures can result in disqualification. 2006 Rule changes are listed in Blue

2006 Competition Rules

Our festival does not limit the number of entries submitted by any one group. Entries will be taken on a first come first serve basis with a maximum of forty entries in each category. We recommend that contestants enter a maximum of four entries during a performance time block. Competing in multiple locations during a time block is greatly discouraged. We have prepared a tentative schedule based on last year's participation.

Release Forms

Release forms are a condition of participation. Release form MUST BE SUBMITTED by each dancer attending the festival. Release forms will be due with along with Festival Application and Full  Payment on January 31st.

Time and Tardy Penalty

Substitutions

Teachers may substitute dancers and change the music as long as they remain in the same age division and category. All music changes and name changes are to be Emailed by March 1st.

When substitution or additions are made the entry must remain in the original category. If dancers do not qualify for the original category the dancers may perform but not compete for trophies or cash prizes. For example, in the duet/trio category, one of three dancers drops out, there is no problem because 2 dancers remain.  If two dancers drop out and a substitute cannot be found the remaining dancer may perform a solo during the allocated time in the program, but the dancers are not eligible to compete for an award as a duet or solo. Neither can a fourth dancer  be added, because the maximum number in the duet/trio category is three dancers.

Music

EACH ENTRY MUST BE ON A SEPARATE TAPE!!

  •  ALL TAPES MUST BE LABELED AS FOLLOWS: name (individual, school or group) the name of dance, category (solo, duo/ trio, small group, large group, production) and the age division.

  • All entries have a maximum time limit of four minutes. Production numbers have a time limit of six minutes. If a group has a suite of dances in the same age division and category (example-three large group dances from Jalisco) you may request to do them back to back. Write back to back #1/3 of 2/3 and 3/3.  we will honor your request if costume time permits.

  •  Please turn in tapes to person running sound the first time your entry is called (4 to 5 dances to compete).  Collect your tape as soon as you finish from sound technician. All tapes must be cued. Failure to cue tapes will result in a five-point penalty from each judge.

  • We are going to work to have CD capability in all competition locations.  If we are able to provide CD players in all locations we will post it in the March 1st Email.

Props

Hats, canes, chairs, and other props may be used. Scenery, special lighting, knives, and fire are not allowed. Machetes must have the filo (sharpness) removed. Use water in place of candles.

Stage Preparation Time

There will be no designated stage preparation time. Large groups and Cuadros will perform on a proscenium stage with dimensions of 40 X 50. Small groups will perform in the gym in an area 36X40.  Solos will perform on a raised stage in the cafeteria with an area of 24X24.

From working with competition teams since 1986, I recommend facing different walls during rehearsals. Two weeks before a competition, I recommend using a different studio or location to practice. Then return to your regular space and work on the spacing problems.
