What Folklórico Means to me?

By: Alexander A. del Castillo

Scholarship Winner April 2005

To me folklórico is my life and my hobby. Folklórico is a passion for life. Many people have inspired me to dance like my mom, Lupe A. del Castillo, and her daughter Giovanna. They are the people who have inspired me to dance folklórico.

When I hear folklórico music, I feel happy and cheerful. When I am full of anger all I have to do is put my folklórico music and stomp my feet. I always feel like I know everything about folklórico. But I guess what I really means is that the music moves me. I have been fortunate to have special people teach me to dance from my heart.

Along with my love of folklórico I can also share my culture with other people. When I see their expressions, I know I have reached them. I have shared an experience with them even though I have not met them personally.

Last year, one of my middle school coaches ran talent show. When I told him wanted to dance something "Mexican", he told me, "I'll see if I have room". I was disappointed but I tried out anyway. When my coach saw me, he was surprised and told my mom, "I didn't know he had it in him!" I felt proud of myself because I was able to share my culture with others.

Folklórico is life, passion and excitement. What would I do without it? how would the word be without it? That is something we will never know. But I can tell you this, until the day I die; folklórico will always be a continued growing part of my heart.
