La Gran Competencia
The purpose of the Gran Competencia is to:

  • Demonstrate the highest standards for excellence to aspiring students
  • Provide developing companies a format to showcase their work
  • Receive professional critiques from a panel of maestros de folklórico
  • Raise the standards of performance and authenticity
  • Build an audience for folkórico in the Dallas area

Criteria for Selection

Submissions will be judged based on entertainment quality, technical support, and authenticity. It is important that the highest standards for authenticity be maintained by the leading folklórico dance companies because their performances will be emulated by others.

During the 2005, competition the judges had a very difficult time deciding on one winner. A very length conversation ensued regarding the standards or merits by which a work is to be critiqued. If two works of superior merit are to be considered for first place and one is a strong  theatrical presentation and the other a strong ethnological presentation which do you favor. merit.

It was the consensus of the 2005 judges that a first place not be awarded in the future. It is the intent of our organization to honor both branches of folklórico, the traditional and the progressive.  Isidro Salas, one of our esteemed judges has volunteered to write a position statement.

In creating a memorable evening of dance, care must be taken to give the audience a performance that provides a variety of styles, colors, energy, traditions, and music.  Not only will the quality of the submitted works be considered, but also how the submitted pieces fit together.  Regions and styles that have "not" been presented in recent years will be given precedence over  works that are frequently performed. A list of regions and styles that have been presented is enclosed at the end of this section.

We want to educate the Dallas public and our developing dancers in the beauty and diversity of the Latino culture.  Choreographers whose work is creative, experimental, and pushes the folkloric art to new limits are welcome.  Artists are expected to stay true to the culture honoring the costumes, dance steps, music, mannerisms, and customs of the time they represent.

This is the only competition category where directors and full time professional dancers may compete.

Please use the LGC Entry form for this competition.
