The Texas Salsa Championship is part of International DFW Month 2007, one of 20 collaborative events organized by DFW International Community Alliance. The month highlights global cultures through programs that celebrate the pioneer spirit of the New Americans who are 40% of our region’s residents.
DFW International Community Alliance is the international portal for North Texas, a network of 1,600 of the region’s ethnic and internationally-focused civic, community and educational organizations. Who May
Participate
Public school students 4th through 12th grade. Different categories allow dancers
of different ages and levels of ability and opportunity to participate. Dancers K-3rd grade may present a showcase during the exhibition but they will not be eligible to participate in the classes and competition.
The Salsa Championship
The Salsa Championship is designed to recognize and reward student achievement and to
give professional feedback to the students and teachers. Each group will
receive a written critique from adjudicators. The
entrance, exit, and the usage of the stage space, the choreography, as well
as the technique, projection, timing, costuming, and overall impression will be
evaluated. Decisions
of the adjudicators are final.
Honored Judges
In addition to Karla and Al Espinoza there will be two area judges to be announced.
Showcase Performances
Only dancers not participating in the Championship may present a showcase performance during the Exhibition. Applications will be taken on a first come first serve basis and a $35 fee will be charged. Dancers of all ages and levels of ability are encouraged to
apply.

Definition of Categories
The Couple Competition is a duet performed by a female and male partner who dance primarily in partner positions. Shine sections may be included in this category.
The Ensemble Competition is divided in two divisions. The first division is for groups composed primarily of couples that dance the majority of the dance in partner positions. Shines sections may be included in this category. The
second division is for dance teams that are composed primarily of female dancers or primarily male. These routines will be primarily free style with little or no partnering.

In the Small Ensemble, Large Ensemble and Production Categories, each team will receive only the highest trophy they earn. In the Ensemble Categories there will not be a break down by style of dance.
In categories with only three entries only one first place trophy will be presented. In categories with 4 -5 entries first and second place trophies will be awarded. In categories with 6-9 entries first, second and third place
trophies will be presented. In categories with 10 or more entries two additional trophies will be presented.
Certificates
Individual certificates will be presented to all students participating in the Salsa Championship. First, Second and Third Place Certificates will be presented to all winning students.
Rules and Procedures
Failure to comply with festival policies is ground for disqualification. Good conduct and sportsmanship will be required of all participants.
Deadlines
All entries must be Postmarked and paid in full by midnight February 25th. Late entries must be received by March 4th with a penalty: $15 for each couple entry and $50 for each ensemble entry. Absolutely no entries will be accepted after midnight
March 4th.

When sending payments, send one check or money order for your group. Make your
check or money order payable to the Texas Association for Hispanic Dance and Culture
(TAHDC ). Send entries

Hotel Information
Groups traveling from out of town will need to make reservations early. especially if they want to take advantage of the low rates of Motel 6. A list of hotels near Molina High School are listed for your review.
Dallas Public School Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships are available to assist Dallas Public School students participate in the Texas Salsa Championship.
Applications will be taken on a first come first serve basis with preference given to curricular dance programs. Remaining funds will be granted to extra-curricular programs. Scholarship funds are for entry fees and Showcase fees. Transportation and costumes are the responsibility of the individual groups.

We are presently working on a list of instructors who you may contact for assistance in preparing your entries.
Vicente Vergara, 214-339-2787 or 214-552-1313 student choreographer and director: Vicente and his partner were the 2006 Salsa Championship High Point Winners with a score of 99.25. Vicente has won numerous awards in competition not only in salsa but also for bachata and merengue. Vicente is a student at Mountain View College with aspirations of becoming a certified teacher.
He is the current President of the Latin Dance Club at Mountain View College. In addition to coaching and choreographing for the Mountain View Latin Dance Club, Vicente has worked with several high school salsa teams. As you would expect, Vicente loves to perform. His joy is contagious.
